ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The need for English teachers has surged, given English's pervasive influence across various domains including education, technology, science, business, medicine, and travel. In response, the English Language Teaching program at SIU prepares graduates to become proficient educators capable of instructing at all educational levels, spanning from primary and secondary schools to higher education institutions and beyond into the professional world. Our program provides a balanced blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on training within a student-centered environment. By adopting a holistic approach, we not only cultivate expertise in English language and cutting-edge teaching methodologies but also foster cultural understanding, problem-solving abilities, digital literacy, and other essential 21st-century skills among our graduates.

EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

At the undergraduate (B.A.) level, the curriculum at SIU offers a diverse range of modules catering to various aspects of English language education. The first year prioritizes building a solid foundation in English language proficiency and usage. As students progress into the second and third years, they delve deeper into essential facets necessary for becoming proficient language educators in modern contexts. In the fourth year, teacher candidates engage in a comprehensive year-long observation and practical teaching experience program, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in both public and private school settings.

The Master’s (M.A.) program comprises seven courses meticulously designed to foster strong academic awareness and provide in-depth knowledge in the field. Additionally, candidates participate in a seminar course aimed at preparing them for their research-based thesis, wherein they showcase their ability to contribute meaningfully to the field through original research.

The Ph.D. program, spanning three years full-time or five years part-time, offers a blend of advanced study and research development aimed at achieving excellence in scholarship. Through a rigorous curriculum and research activities, candidates are equipped to make significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge in the field of English language education.
